Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider Course is designed for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the management of respiratory and/or cardiovascular emergencies and cardiopulmonary arrest in pediatric patients. Precourse preparation, didactic instruction, and active participation in skill stations and simulated cases will be used to enhance the recognition of and intervention for respiratory emergencies, shock, and cardiopulmonary arrest.

During the course, the student will actively participate in:

  • Identification and treatment of problems that place the child at risk for cardiac arrest
  • Application of a systematic approach to pediatric assessment
  • Use of the evaluate-identify-intervene sequence
  • Use of PALS algorithms and flowcharts. Demonstration of effective resuscitation team dynamics

Learning Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Perform high-quality Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) per American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) recommendations
  • Differentiate between patients who do and do not require immediate intervention
  • Recognize cardiopulmonary arrest early and begin CPR within 10 seconds
  • Apply team dynamics
  • Differentiate between respiratory distress and failure
  • Perform early interventions respiratory distress and failure
  • Differentiate between compensated and decompensated (hypotensive) shock
  • Perform early interventions for the treatment of shock
  • Describe clinical characteristics of instability in patients with arrhythmia implement post-cardiac arrest management
  • Differentiate between unstable and stable patients with arrhythmias

Course Description: To help you achieve these objectives, the PALS Provider Course includes:

  • BLS competency testing
  • Case scenario discussions, simulations and testing stations
  • A final exam
